Awesome Stuff I Bought This Year

So I've been sort of lax about posting...I hope Maryse can forgive me! Hopefully by the end of the summer I can convince my parents to get me my own digital camera so I can start doing posts similar to hers (which I always love). My freshman year of college is OVER!! It's good to be home, but I'm starting to miss Bryn Mawr a bit.

Starting next week I'll be in D.C. for an internship, so I want to wear my "teenager clothes" (as Mommy calls them) as much as possible. Most of my stuff is still packed up in the garage--my dad keeps knocking over my boxes with his car, ugh--but I went through a bit today for a quick inventory.

I accumulated a lot this year, I must admit. Mostly it's my own selfish materialism, but I think my wonderful location is to blame, as well. Philly is only a 25-minute train ride away, and though no one on the Main Line will ever say anything positive about the Septa, it's really not that bad as public transportation goes.

Every time I went to South Street, I found something wonderful. This one place, I *think* it's called Siglo Accessories, was where I found my current two favorite pairs of earrings. I purchased my over-the-knee black suede boots from Barefeet Shoes (or Barefoot, sorry I'm bad with store names) fall semester. When I went back in the spring, I found my current obsession: a great pair of gladiator sandals.

I had a hard time choosing, but ultimately I went for brown. I can't say how much I love these shoes--comfy and stylish, how rare. I'd never pair it with such a blah denim mini-skirt though--my favorite outfit has been the sandals, with red matte Banana Republic shorts, dangly gold leaf earrings, and a sea-green kurta with red-orange beading at the neck I got from Pakistan. Ugh I wish I had a picture, I promise you it's cute.

However, it wasn't just the allure of Philadelphia that resulted in me buying so many things. Often times I didn't have to go any further than the town of Bryn Mawr! As far as college towns go, to most people, Bryn Mawr isn't really the coolest place...lots of antique shops. To me though, it's a terrific town. I've been to a few fancy restaurants in Philly but for my money nothing beats the Greek place by the train station. Seriously, GO THERE.

While the Greene Street on South Street is definitely better than the Bryn Mawr one, my favorite consignment store is Piccadilly Court, also by the train station. My mom hated it when she came, complaining about the smell, but hey! That gives a thrift store character, and legitimacy. I haven't gotten any clothes there, it's pretty hard to find things in my size, though I have two scarves, a ring, and my favorite, a watch.

Before I got this watch, I basically just wore this superfantastic silver Dior watch every time it matched an outfit. I really recommend having two different types of watches, I personally enjoy being able to tell the time while being coordinated with the rest of whatever look I'm going for. Haha I wonder how lame that sounds :P

Anyway, I don't know much about the company, but my thrift store watch is a ladie's wind-up Elgin watch. I did a bit of research, it's a fairly old company and I think they've stopped making watches so it's pretty cool to own one, I guess. At least the saleslady said that, she was very excited when talking about the watch.

I think my favorite thing about it is the ticking noise--it does get a bit annoying having to re-set the time almost every day and wind it back up, but for some odd reason I find that tick deeply comforting. Good sound to hear while taking a vicious final, I think. I don't know if the left picture shows it very well, mostly I put it because it's one of the few pictures I've enjoyed of myself haha.

I cropped an ad from 1948 (featuring Rosalind Russel, very exciting) to try to find a better picture. Mine is the very last one. I have pretty small wrists, so as you can see from the Me picture, the watch falls down a bit. The woman at the store suggested going to a jeweler and having it fitted properly to stay at my wrist, but I kind of like the effect of it being like a loose thin bracelet. Eh, I don't know. Thoughts?

Aww I'm definitely going to post more, I forget how fun and cathartic this is.

Home at last

I am home from my first year at college and must confess to having been in a bit of a style rut for the past few weeks, especially the last weeks of the semester.

I have always been one of those people who refused to leave my home in my pajamas, or anything approximating pajamas (this includes sweatpants, baggy t-shirts, or any kind of clothing you would wear to work out at the gym). No matter the weather, I would always attempt to dress myself in a stylish (but not requiring TOO much effort, has to look careless of course) manner

This semester however, the weather would just not cooperate. I figured that since DC is sort of the South, the weather would get nice in late February/March.

THAT DID NOT HAPPEN.

I kept my winter clothes around for far too long. And then, when I finally packed them away in late March/early April, guess what?! We got a cold, rainy few days and I was forced to unearth my tired old sweaters and tights and jeans and wellingtons when, emotionally, I was more than ready for sandals and (classy) shorts and flimsy florals and COTTON.

Most shamefully, my friend and I started our own radio show. As freshmen, we got the worst time slot--8 AM on Sunday mornings. Foolishly, I thought, "Oh, I can handle this. I had an 8 AM class three times a week last semester, a 15 minute walk to the exact opposite end of campus. I never EVER wore pajamas to that class, always managing to dress myself with dignity."

Waking up that early on Sundays is really, really hard. And it never got easier...it got harder each week. Thankfully no one was really out that early...but I am ashamed to admit that every Sunday for the last semester, I wore my pajamas out to walk to radio. Thankfully, I managed to follow another one of my personal rules: ALWAYS wear a bra, even if you think you don't need one. (The exception, of course, is if a certain dress or top is cut too weirdly to wear one, and you're small enough to pass). Despite temptations to just throw on my coat over my ratty Model UN t-shirt and call it a day...I forced myself to, at the very least, have some semblance of decency and put on a brassiere.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that I am home now and ready for some NICE weather so I can get out of this style rut and wear some fun summer clothing. Alas, it's raining today...but as a curly haired orphan once said, the sun will come out tomorrow.

IT BETTER, anyway. Because I put my rain boots in storage.

outfit of the day

This is what I wore for my first day of no classes! I just have 4 finals to take and I will be done with school for the year (well, until the Fall semester starts). It's funny because I am actually starting to run out of jeans and more casual stuff. All I have left are skirts and dresses really. So I might be quite dressed to take my finals. (You know, instead of being a normal person and doing the laundry. I am TOO lazy). The forecast is calling for a lot of rain though...oh well. I sold some books back today and got around $100 back. Not so bad. I still have a massive biology textbook to get rid of though. I'm going to have to find somewhere else to sell it because the bookstore was going to give me $7 for a book originally purchased brand new for $150. I've been watching videos of Lisa Hannigan lately and this outfit was kind of inspired by her. At first, her style was pretty grungy/hippie/overall kind of unflattering but now she wears velvet blazers, skirts, boots, and cute head scarves.

The poses are a bit funny and I look rather miserable but I got tired taking pictures. Also, as you can see my roommate has already moved out.
